From food festivals to marathons, the Gulf Coast has it all! Here are a few fun things you might want to check out this month.
BBQ & Blues Cook-Off 2017
Held the third Saturday in March every year, the BBQ & Blues Cook-Off offers great food along with blues music, children’s activities and arts and crafts. Not only does the cook-off provide participants with the opportunity to enjoy a variety of great BBQ concoctions, but those who want to show off their skills can also form teams to compete in a variety of different categories. Among these are Best “Q”, Anything “Butt” and Best Sauce.
The BBQ & Blues Cook-Off 2017 event will take place at Heritage Park, which is located at 125 E. Laurel Avenue in Foley, on March 18th from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. Tickets are $10, with children 10 and under admitted for free. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate on the day of the event.
The Original German Sausage Festival
Making its semiannual return to Alabama, the Original German Sausage Festival attracts up to 20,000 visitors each year. At the festival, participants can enjoy Elberta’s famous German sausage and sauerkraut while also exploring 250 arts & crafts booths, carnival rides and a full-scale Midway. The festival also features a Bier Garten boasting a large selection of imported and domestic beers, polka dancing, German music and performances from the Bellview Stumpfiddle Band with the North End Stompers.
The Original German Sausage Festival takes place at Elberta Town Park, which is located at 13052 Main Street in Elberta, on March 25th from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. The event is free to the public. Started in 1978, the event is spearheaded by Elberta’s Volunteer Fire Department with proceeds used for improving the fire department and making other town improvements. Local non-profits also benefit from the festival with the proceeds from their booth sales and parking lot fees. The event returns to the area on the last Saturday of March and the last Saturday of October every year. About 7,000 pounds of German Sausage is consumed a the festival each year.
2017 Flora-Bama’s Beach Run/Walk for America’s Warriors 5K & ½ Marathon
After attending the food festivals, you might want to work off some of those calories at the 2017 Flora-Bama’s Beach Run/Walk for America’s Warriors 5K & ½ Marathon. The event takes place along the white sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast, with 5K runners headed into Alabama and those running the half-marathon heading into Florida.
The 2017 Flora-Bama’s Beach Run/Walk for America’s Warriors 5K & ½ Marathon takes place on March 25th from 7:30 am until noon. The event kicks off at the Flora-Bama Lounge & Oyster Bar, which is located at 17401 Perdido Key Drive in Perdido Key. The entry fee for the half marathon is $55 while the fee for the walk is $35. Events are non-refundable and will be held rain or shine. Proceeds go to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides full scholarship grants as well as educational and family counseling to the surviving children of the Navy, Army, Air Force and Marine Corps.
